The first call “Digital Humanism” in WWTF’s Information and Communication Technology Programme closed on September 22, 2020. We received 99 short proposals. These proposals are currently evaluated by the international call jury.
On September 16 and 17, 2020 the jury meeting of the WWTF Call Environmental Systems Research: Urban Regions took place in an online meeting. In total 23 PIs were invited to submitt a full proposal. 8 projects will be funded with a total funding amount of 5 m €.
A main result of the H2020 project "GEECCO", in which the WWTF is participating as one of two funding organizations, is the exhibition Exhibition Integrating the Gender Dimension in the Content of Research and Innovation
The event discusses the accelerated transformation in its political, ethical, and social dimensions, but also reviews the contribution of Informatics to managing the corona crisis, discusses the current urgent privacy issues, looks at the impact on society, politics, and what it means to be a digital human in and post COVID-19 times.
One main output of the project GEECCO, which is of interest especially for research funding institutions, is the report Best practice examples of gender mainstreaming in Research Funding Organizations. The document was created by WWTF together with TACR (Technology Agency of the Czech Republic) and is based on a questionnaire survey filled by 19 international RFOs.
The call for projects on „Digital Humanism” 2020 is open. WWTF invites applicants to submit an interdisciplinary project between ICT and SSH. To facilitate the collaboration WWTF set up a Matchmaking Platform to find collaboration partners
In times of the global corona crisis, science is highly active: It helps to develop diagnostic tests, therapies and vaccinations, to make prognoses about the future course of the pandemic, and how to deal with the societal consequences. In order to be able to react quickly to the challenges of the crisis and to collect research-relevant data in a timely manner, within one week WWTF launched the "COVID-19 Rapid Response Funding". Elly Tanaka from the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) receives the "Women in Science Award 2020". The award recognizes outstanding contributions by female researchers in the life sciences. The WWTF funds the current research project "Photochemical control of biohybrid matrices to reconstitute nervous system organization from three-dimensional neural organoids" by Elly Tanaka as part of the Life Sciences - Chemical Biology call.

The expert panel chaired by Prof. Markus Sauer recommended six projects for funding, with a total amount of 4,089,910 €.

After careful considerations, the Board of Directors has decided on the recommendation of the Advisory Board, to change our funding portfolio and to phase out the thematic programme "Mathematics and ..." after nearly 15 years of funding.
The second call in the newly established thematic programme "Environmental Systems Research" will start in autumn 2019. The details of the call will be published in the next weeks. The short proposal phase will be open until mid January, the final funding decision is expected for autumn 2020.

The maximum funding volumen per project was 50.000 €.
The jury, chaired by Dr. Irene Fialka (INiTS), recommended to fund five projects with an amount of € 246.230 . The jury selected specific transfer ideas, which allow to apply research results achieved in WWTF projects and to make the results accessible to new target groups.
In the proposal phase of the WWTF VRG Call 2019 "Interdisciplinary Data Science", 11 applications were submitted by June 13, 2019. The applications are currently under review by the international jury. The funding decision will be made in December 2019.
In the short proposal phase of the WWTF LS19 Call, 55 short proposals were submitted by April 4, 2019. At the jury meeting on May 28 and 29 in Vienna, the jury selected 20 applications, which can submit a full proposal by 8.8.2019, 14:00.
It is with great shock and distress that we hear of Professor Ayse Gül Altinay’s sentencing to 25 months in prison for “willingly and knowingly supporting a terrorist organisation as a non-member”. WWTF stands in solidarity with Ayse Gül Altinay, Professor of Anthropology and Director of Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Center of Excellence (SU Gender) and editorial board member of the European Journal of Women’s Studies.

The WWTF ICT19 call addressing all areas of information and communication technologies is now in the evaulation phase. In January, 96 short proposals were submitted. The international jury selected 26 projects to be invited to submit an extended full proposal. The dealine was May 16 and all 26 projects submitted a proposal. The proposals will now be reviewed and the jury will make a funding decision based in the review reports in October 2019.

On November 26, 2018 the jury meeting of the third WWTF Cognitive Sciences Call took place in Vienna. In total 18 PIs were invited to submitt a full proposal. 6 projects will be funded with a total funding amount of 3.5 m €.
On December 11, WWTF Board of Directors made the formal funding decision after the selection of the funded positions by the call jury. Three positions are funded with 1.6 m € for each of the groups. The funded group leaders will be announced shortly.

Scientists from Martin Leeb's group at the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (MFPL) of the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna, together with colleagues at the University of Cambridge, successfully mapped the 3D structure of the genome in single mammalian stem cells.
It is with great sadness that we have learnt of the passing away of Anna Tramontano. She was a longstanding friend and supporter of WWTF and an outstanding scientist. We express our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.
Anna was professor at the Sapienza University of Rome and member of the Scientific Council of the ERC.
60 researchers participated in the Proposers' Day and Matchmaking Event for the Life Sciences 2017 "Chemical Biology" on March 8.
In 2015 Filipa L. Sousa was recruited to the University of Vienna through the Vienna Research Group funding programme (financed by the City of Vienna) and was awarded € 1.6 m. The newspaper “Die Presse” released a detailed portrait of Filipa and her research on Archaea.
On March 9-10, 2017 the international jury of the “Environmental Systems Research: Urban Environments” Pilot Call met in Vienna to make the decision on the invitation to the full proposal phase. Out of all 93 submitted proposals, 25 have been invited to submit a full proposal. The deadline for full proposals is on May 18, 2017 at 2 pm.
3.000 private video recordings were collected and archived under the direction of Gabriele Fröschl, PI of the WWTF funded project SSH13-007 "The Changing Role of Audio-Visual Archives as Memory Storages in the Public Space. Using the example of private video sources" . The project was funded within the 2013 Public Spaces inTransition Call, the last call within the Social Sciencs & Humanities (SSH) in Vienna Programme funded by the City of Vienna.

Christoph Eisenegger (1978-2017) passed away unexpectedly during a stay abroad. We highly appreciated him as a person and as a researcher. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

Research conducted in the WWTF-funded project of Thomas Dorner (LS12-039) shows that social interaction reduced the frailty of elderly persons.
Researchers at the Medical University of Vienna recently published a study in the high impact journal "Scientific Reports". In this study they could show, that a neuropeptide ("inotocin") isolated from ants has a particularly high pharmacological potential for humans.
Researchers in the team of Manuela Baccarini (MFPL), Co-PI in the project MA14-049 discovered a surprising role of the protein RAF1 in cancer cells: usually this protein enhances tumor cell growth, however it has the opposite effect in liver carcinomas, where in some tumor cell types it suppresses cell growth.

In sophisticated experiments, Alipasha Vaziri has shown that the human eye is able to perceive single photons. Vaziri came to Vienna thanks to a WWTF Vienna Research Groups for Young Investigators grant in 2010 (VRG10-011). He now has his own lab at the Rockefeller University in New York.
