In 2020, the Wien Museum completely redeveloped its Online Collection with Bleed Design Studio as a partner and introduced an open content policy that focuses on free access and reuse of high quality images. The inspiring collaboration continued with a crowdsourcing platform that invited the public to transcribe hand-written texts on postcards. Both projects highlighted our audience’s eagerness to engage with the museum’s content and to join our research efforts. After two years of experience with the Online Collection, the current project allowed us to expand our purview from the creation of online content to its use. Our questions were: Who are the people using our Online Collection and who are those who don’t? What barriers to the platform can we remove? What features in terms of content and function are still missing? In workshops, we developed ideas for participatory adaptations of the existing website as well as formats for further digital platforms such as social media. The resulting documentation serves as a roadmap for the museum as it works toward achieving the overarching goal of equal access to all knowledge.
