From Flies to Humans - Novel Approaches for Obesity and Diabetes
Obesity is a major risk factor for numerous chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese. Thus, obesity represents one of the greatest social, medical and economic challenges today. The “Flies to Humans - Novel Approaches for Obesity and Diabetes” network integrates basic and clinical research that aims to combine unique in vivo whole genome screening tools in a model organism with clinical research in patients to identify novel regulators of obesity and lipid metabolism. The ultimate goal of this proposal is to develop new diagnostic tools and to identify potential new targets for novel therapeutic approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity and diabetes.
