A research group on bioinformatics and systematic biology is established, to be headed by Dr. David Kreil. This group will be closely integrated in the Biotechnology Department at Muthgasse, to prepare the ground for an intense cooperation with fields in which the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences has its fortes: bioengineering, green biotechnology and biodiversity.

Coming from Cambridge University, Dr. Kreil is exemplary in combining biology and informatics by studying the genetic and non-genetic causes of individuality in the Drosophila model organism. His methods of developing, calibrating and validating biochips for his studies are of great importance for bioscientists in Vienna.

A strategic long-term goal of the group around Dr. Kreil is the establishment of calibrated experimental methods that can be applied to the entire genome.
